I'm not a fine craftsman, more of a hack. I play with a wide variety of stuff, both woodworking; smaller projects, and metal working; also smaller projects. My tools aren't the best quality, but they're usually not the cheapest either (at least in most cases).
I hardly ever work with official plans. I look over the materials I have laying around and try to design a project to fit. I do make sketches and plan out projects, but not in a lot of detail. If I screw up something (which happens often) I try to see how to recover and either fix my goof, or use the mistake in some other project.
So far the smallest item I've made was a small wooden box to store a scratch awl tip (about 1/4" x 1"). The largest projects are probably the workbenches and parts roll-around stand.
